When to Observe Safar Waxing (NEW) Crescent ?


The geocentric conjunction (Geocentric New Moon) will occur Inshalla on (Saturday 22 November 2014) at 12:32 UT.

Sighting the new crescent on (Saturday 22 November 2014) and (Sunday 23 November 2014) is shown in the below graphs using the program Accurate Times by Mohammad Odeh according to Odeh criterion. Where:-

According to the Universal Hejric Calendar (UHC), which is based on the calculated crescent visibility, the start of this month in the Eastern Region will be on Monday 24 November 2014 and in the Western Region will be on Sunday 23 November 2014. Kindly notice that the UHC is a pre-calculated calendar, which adopts a certain criterion to start the new Hejric month. Your country/organization might adopt different criterion to start the new Hejric month. So it is highly advised to read the UHC website before giving any judgment.

Mohamed Mogerby from طرابلس City in المدينة State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not seen by binocular, the crescent was not seen by telescope, the crescent was not seen by CCD Imaging

Mr. Qamarudeen Muhammad said: "The New Hilaal on Safar was not seen here at Lagos and report from Ilorin, Abuja and Bauchi indicate negative sighting as well"

Dr. Z.Sani Mustapha said: "The stars as an aid to sighting the moon on day 1, are not visible on the western horizon after sunset. "



Oman


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Prof. Mohammed Al-Bussaidi from Al-Fulaij Observatory City in Muscat State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not seen by telescope, the crescent was not seen by CCD Imaging
Prof. Mohammed Al-Bussaidi said: "The western sky was clear, no haze, no dust. The crescent Moon was not sighted."



Saudi Arabia

   Banded clouds covered the western horizon.

I was NOT able to see the crescent, even through a telescope.

We were given several minutes when the crescent was between clouds, and despite having the telescope precisely pointed, and each observer knowing his focus point, were unable to see the hilaal.

Martin Elsaesser from Sudelfeld City in Bavaria State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was seen by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Eng. Martin Elsaesser said: "Thick fog at home forced me to drive 60km to the alps to view the young crescent. After one hour of unpleasant driving i found wonderfull clear skies at 1500m height. The very thin crescent could be seen visually with binoculars and naked eyes soon after sunset. The darker it got the easier it was to see. The clear skies made it possible to follow it all the way down to the horizon."



Ghana

Seen: ICOP member Mr. Baba Abdulai from Tamale City in Northern Region State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Baba Abdulai said: "Date of sighting effort; Sunday, 23rd November, 2014. The crescent was SEEN in this location having a 4 to 8 o'clock orientation. Time of first sighting; 18:05. The sky was quite clear with almost no clouds but very dusty. As at 18:25 the crescent could still be seen. Sighting location; Sagnerigu community, Tamale, Northern Region."



Hungary


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Dr. M. Mr. AR Sugeng Riyadi said: "The daytime crescent was not seen from Assalaam Observatory on Sunday, Nov 23, 2014 because the sky was partly cloudy and hazy.

We were from member of "Workshop: Before & After Sunset Crescent Observation", by LP2IF RHI in collaboration with CASA-Assalaam Observatory and Bosscha Observatory, 22-23 Nov 2014."

Mr. AR Sugeng Riyadi said: "On Sunday evening (after sunset) 23 Nov 2014 the new crescent of Safar 1436 AH was not seen from Assalaam Observatory, The Modern Boarding School of Islam ASSALAAM Sukoharjo-Surakarta Central Java Indonesia. The sky was cloudy and rainy."



Iran

Equipments: two sets of 15*70, one compass.
Atmospheric condition: Partly cloudy in western horizon.

Results: Moon crescent was seen by 15*70 binoculars by Ali Janghorbani at 17:07 between clouds, for the first time. Other group members observed crescent by 15*70 binoculars subsequently. Crescent observed by Tayebeh Shafiee 17:10 by naked eye. Other group members observed crescent by naked eye

Dr. Z.Sani Mustapha said: "Hisab of moon phase points to the appearance of the lunar month after sunset todau. This is because the crescent was seen on the 27th after fajr at 5.33 a.m. It csnmnot be sighted on the 28th. Therefore the month of Mugarram is 29 days according to the sunna. This makes today 1st of safar."



2 . Time of observation: After sunset.Seen by others: ICOP member Mr. Yunusa Yakubu from Bauchi City in Bauchi State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not seen by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Yunusa Yakubu said: "Positive sighting was reported by Mallam Aminu with ten other from Takin Fulani village at Tafawa Balewa LGA in Bauchi Nigeria"

Qamar Uddin from Dammam City in Easter Province State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was seen by binocular, the crescent was seen by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Eng. Qamar Uddin said: "I was hoping to be able to sight the 25 hrs old moon from the Dammam (Saudi Arabia), which was over 1.3% illuminated and 11 degrees above horizon at sunset, but unfortunately the moon was not sighted as the western horizon was totally cloudy. However, another group of observers from Qasim area was able to see if between a gap in the clouds after locating it with a telescope.

Note that the official date of Saudi Arabia will be based on the pre-calculated Ummul Quara calendar until next Ramadan & Eids (and not on actual sightings). "



South Africa

Today 29th.Muharram 1436H (23/11/14) it's a rainy evening almost every ware in Sil Lanka so we fail to sight the New Moon of Safer due to overcast. Our Hillal Committee checked with all the observers around Sri Lanka till 8pm and no positive sighting were reported. As in Colombo the Sunset was at 5:50pm and Moonset was at 6:44pm.that's 56m.after Sunset at the age of 23h.:48m. Hence The Colombo Grand Mosque Hillal Committee decidted to complete the month of Muharram with 30days.and start the month of Safer on 25th.Tuesday November 2014. "In Sha Allah"

Mr. Zaffar Sheriff said: "The crescent sighting for the month of Safar was confirmed at 6.39pm

Time of observation: After sunset.Seen by others: ICOP member Dr. Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg City in VA State mentioned that the sky was totally cloudy, the atmospheric condition was very hazy, the crescent was not sought by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Dr. Javad Torabinejad said: "Due to a cloudy and rainy condition, it was impossible to sight the crescent in Blacksburg.


Mr. Jim Lockyer of Wildomar, CA informed me that: "I was able to observe the crescent moon this evening after all. Following a beautiful sunset the clouds thinned out to display the moon. The moon was clearly visible without the aid of binoculars".  The pictures are related to Mr. Lockyer's sighting."

On Sunday, November 23, 2014 from 6:00pm to 6:10pm I saw the new crescent moon of Safar 1436 with my children just outside my home in Richmond, Texas, USA.

I searched for the moon and spotted it without the use of any optical aids - and then took photos with my camera afterwards to document the sighting.

Mr. Baba Abdulai said: "Myself and the imam of our Masjid sighted the crescent soon after Fajr in our locality of Kakasunanka. I did not check the time of sighting, but Fajr was at 4:55 am. Thus, i guess our sighting must have been somewhere between 5:15am and 5:30am."
