Old Moon   Crescent Observation Report
======================================
Observed: Tuesday; August 18, 2020 at 05:53 (Local Time)

Location (WGS 84): Oro Valley, Arizona (USA)
  Longitude   =    110.9652 W
  Latitude    =     32.4205 N
  Elevation   =     842 meters
  Time Zone   =    -7.0 hours

Surface conditions at     Oro Valley:
  Temperature           = 79.4 °F
  Dew Point             = 57.0 °F
  Barometric Pressure   = 29.82 inches

Set-up and begining of observation under wide-spread haze, but stars on the horizon were telescopically visible.

Topocentric and local time values from “Accurate Times”:
..Moonrise (at sea level) = 05:05
  Sunrise (at sea level) = 05:45

  Time from new moon at 05:53 = 14 hr. 39 min.
  Moon lag time = 40 min.
  Relative Altitude               =    7.7   degrees
  Elongation from sun = 7.8 degrees
  Crescent width = 9 arc sec
  Illumination                    =    0.46  percent

Crescent first observed through 8” SC telescope:
  Time   =   05:46
  Moon Altitude  =    5.8 degrees

Final observation with telescope:
  Time   =   05:53
  Moon Altitude  =    7.2 degrees

I suspected the crescent when it entered the FOV, about 30 seconds earlier than I had planned to begin searching. It didn’t last long, but when it reappeared a little “higher”, I knew that I had the crescent. The image faded and reappeared several times until 05:53. After that the image was so tenuous that it could have been “wishful thinking”, so I counted 05:53 as my last observation. I was centered on the mid-point of the bright limb, but only the crescent to the right of that point was visible, maybe 30 degrees of arc, but not all at the same time. I think that this may have been the “closest to threshold” observation of the hilaal that I have made.
