When to Observe Muharram Waxing (NEW) Crescent ?


The geocentric conjunction (Geocentric New Moon) will occur Inshalla on (Sunday 03 November 2013) at 12:50 UT.

Sighting the new crescent on (Sunday 03 November 2013) and (Monday 04 November 2013) is shown in the below graphs using the program Accurate Times by Mohammad Odeh according to Odeh criterion. Where:-

According to the Universal Hejric Calendar (UHC), which is based on the calculated crescent visibility, the start of this month in the Eastern Region will be on Tuesday 05 November 2013 and in the Western Region will be on Tuesday 05 November 2013. Kindly notice that the UHC is a pre-calculated calendar, which adopts a certain criterion to start the new Hejric month. Your country/organization might adopt different criterion to start the new Hejric month. So it is highly advised to read the UHC website before giving any judgment.

1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Prof. Mohammed Al-Bussaidi from Al-Fulaij Observatory City in Muscat State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not seen by telescope, the crescent was not seen by CCD Imaging
Prof. Mohammed Al-Bussaidi said: "The crescent was not sighted. The weather was cloudy."



Saudi Arabia


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Saleh Al-Saab from بريدة City in البصر State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was superb, the crescent was not sought by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Saleh Al-Saab said: "تمت مراقبة الكسوف بواسطة التلسكوب لعدة دقائق فقط بسبب الغيوم وذلك قبل غروب الشمس بعشرين دقيقة ."

Mr. Jim Stamm said: "Visually, the sky looked as good as it gets.  I think that I'll have to go up the mountain if I expect to see any more sub-Danjon crescents."

Mr. AR Sugeng Riyadi said: "On Monday, Nop 04, 2013, we (50 Muslims, my students of CASA PPMI Assalaam and CASTROSMALSA of SHS Al-Islam 1 Surakarta) did not see the moon in Assalaam Observatory, Pabelan Kartasura Sukoharjo Central Java Indonesia even by telescope because the sky was totally cloudy.
The 1st of Muharram 1435 AH in Indonesia will start on Tuesday, Nop 5, 2013.
Happy new year 1435 AH for all my brothers .."

The report of observation of the Muharram crescent on Monday 2013/11/4 from The Astronomy and Geophi sics center of Shahreza – The crescent association of Shahreza .
The custody of report : Janghorbani Hossein (Najomosepehr)
The responsible of the crescent association of shahreza city – the partners of the red crescent Astronomy and Geophi sics center and the crescent association of Shahreza with the custody of Janghorbani Hossein on Monday afternoon 2013/11/4 went to the Damzad area based on the east  of Shahreza for the observation of the Muharram attractive crescent (latitudinal : 32  00 N  . longitudinal : 51  52 E  . The height from the sea level 1825m . The time  zone : 3.5 ) that is following :
The equipments : two sets of the binoculars 15*70 and 20*90 and one set of compass.
The atmospheric position : The presence of the dust and the cloud in the western horizon .
The obstacles in the horizon : about 1.5 
The false sunset of the sun: 04:55 pm
Result : the crescent was saw by Janghorbani Ali in 05:16 pm with the binocular 20*90 .The crescent was saw by Janghorbani Reza with the disarmed eye in 05:19 pm and all the observers saw this crescent with the armed and disarmed eye .

Dr. Hassan Talibi said: "تأخرت قليلا عن مشاهدة الهلال وتصويره لأني كنت مسافرا في فج عميق بين الجبال، فما إن خرجت منه أسرت لالتقاط صور له بصعوبة لأنه كان منخفضا وقريبا من شريط من السحاب. "

Today 29th.of Dul Haj (4/11/2013) it is a rainy evening. Anyway I went up to my roof top to observe the Hilal of Muharram 1435H, I couldn't trace a thing as the western sky was covered by black clouds anyway our Hilal Committee of Grand Mosque Colombo had received some positive naked eye sighting from the North West town of  Puttalam and our Hilal Committee of Sri Lanka announced to start the New Year 1435H & month of Muharram tomorrow Tuesday the 5th.of November 2013. In Sha Allah.

Eng. Mohammad Odeh said: "حاولت تحري الهلال بالعين المجردة فقط، وهذه كانت من المرات النادرة التي أحاول تحري الهلال بالعين المجردة فقط. الغلاف الجوي لم يكن نقيا تماما ولكن يمكن اعتباره مقبول بالنسبة لأبوظبي. فالشمس اختفت تقريبا عند ملامستها البحر. حاولت رؤية الهلال، ورأيت أكثر من 20 هلال! كان لافتا للنظر كيف كنت أرى أكثر من هلال في آن واحد في جهات مختلفة ولكنها متقاربة، وهذا أمر طبيعي يحدث مع أي راصد للهلال يحاول التركيز لمدة طويلة! لا أستطيع التأكيد أنني رأيت الهلال فعلا، مع أنني أعتقد أنني رأيته ثلاث مرات، ولكن لم أصل لدرجة اليقين أن ما أراه كان هو الهلال! ففي أفضل التقديرات وصلت لنسبة 70% أنني أرى الهلال. لذلك أفضل القول نهاية أنني لم أر الهلال! كانت آخر قيمة للـ AOD هي 0.27."



United Kingdom

Qamar Uddin from York City in North Yorkshire State mentioned that the sky was totally cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Eng. Qamar Uddin said: "On Monday, 4 November 2013 (29 Dhul Hijjah 1434 AH) many people from throughout UK have attempted to sight the crescent moon (Hilal) of Muharram after sunset. None of the groups were able to sight the Hilal, as many places had cloudy sky conditions.

However, we  have received reliable sighting reports (Muhaqaq-Ruyat-Basari) from Morocco Awqaf Ministry and Jamiat-e-Ulama, South Africa.

Therefore, the Wifaq/Batley Ulama have decided that the month of Dhul Hijjah 1434 AH will have 29-days and the  month of Muharram 1435 AH will start from Tuesday 5 November 2013 (making Ashura fast on Thursday 14 November 2013), Insha-Allah."



United States


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Seen: ICOP member Dr. Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg City in VA State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was seen by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Dr. Javad Torabinejad said: "I arrived at my sighting location (The Blacksburg Middle School) at 5:37 pm EST (sunset: 5:20 pm).  The upper part of the western horizon was mostly cloudy.  Using a pair binoculars (7X50), I scanned the areas with thin clouds or no clouds.  At 5:58 pm, the crescent was sighted by naked eye just appearing in the clear area below the clouds.  The horns were at 1:30 and 6:30 O'clock (1:30;4:00;6:30).  I left the site at 6:20 pm when the moon disappeared behind the clouds hugging the lower part of the horizon (moonset: 6:25 pm)."

Ali Majeed Al Hajari from عيسى City in الوسطى State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was seen by binocular, the crescent was seen by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Eng. Ali Majeed Al Hajari said: "تم رصد اخر هلال ذو الحجة في صباح يوم السبت والذي ظهر واضحا برغم ارتفاع نسبة الرطوبة."



Germany


1 . Time of observation: Before sunrise. Seen: ICOP member Eng. Martin Elsaesser from Munich City in Bavaria State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was not sought by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was seen by telescope, the crescent was seen by CCD Imaging
Eng. Martin Elsaesser said: "The weather on 02. November was bad again in the morning so i could not observe the occultation of Spica through the moon and had to resort to daytime observation. The weather around noon was better with some good blue gaps. The crescent could be seen visually through a telescope at 27x magnification and of course the imaging system showed it easily at 13.5° elongation from the sun."

Mr. AR Sugeng Riyadi said: "On Saturday, Nop 2,2013 The Old Crescent of Thul Hijjah 1434 AH was very easy SEEN from Assalaam Observatory. I and my students (Taufiq Hidayat, Indra Setyawan and Bahrul Hidayat) tried to observe the moon before shubuh prayer. The east horizon was partly cloudy with several hole above the Lawu mountain.

Mr. AR Sugeng Riyadi said: "On Sunday, Nop 3, 2013 we were from CASA (Club Astronomi Santri Assalaam) at Assalaam Observatory - Pabelan Kartasura Sukoharjo - Surakarta Central Java Indonesia, tried to observe the old crescent of Thulhijjah 1434 AH, but it was NOT SEEN. The sky was totally cloudy."
